San Antonio Express-News Names Catapult Systems Top Workplace in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX – October 16, 2013 – Catapult Systems, a Microsoft-focused consulting company, rated No. 1 in the Top Workplace ranking of small companies in a survey sponsored by the San Antonio Express-News.
The firm also won a special award in the category that states: “This company operates by strong values and ethics.”
Founded in 1993, Catapult has an office in San Antonio as well as eight other locations. It is based in Austin.
Catapult’s employees “are consultants who help clients solve business problems with their Microsoft technology investments,” said Jim Booth, general manager of the San Antonio office.
“Microsoft has a lot of different areas of technology, and we help clients with the integration of different Microsoft systems,” he said.
The company had 38 employees in San Antonio and had about 300 total at the time the survey was conducted.
In responding to the survey, employees praised the company’s culture.
When asked to complete the phrase “I love my job because …” one employee said, “I wake up every day excited to go to work. My co-workers love their job and I feel that we are all on the same page regarding company direction and goals.”
Senior account executive Mark Vachon joined Catapult almost seven years ago. The company surprised him early on because management stressed that “their product is their people,” he said. “That’s how they bring value to their customers.”
The culture hasn’t changed. Although Catapult is growing, management “understands how to grow and not lose the culture,” Vachon said. “Individuals still have a voice and still get heard.”
Catapult offers a range of benefits, including medical, dental and vision plans, as well as tuition reimbursement. Also, it holds an annual kids’ day, inviting employees’ children to the office for a day of activities that include solving mysteries and holding scavenger hunts.
“We have a theme each year, and employees and kids have parts to play,” Booth said.
As part of team-building exercises, once a quarter the Catapult office does something as a group. They’ve played paintball, gone to sports games and taken a winery tour, Booth said.
Account executive Theresa McDaniel joined Catapult about a year ago and is its newest employee in San Antonio. She praised Catapult’s “ambassador” program in which each new employee is assigned a mentor.
For 90 days, the mentor helps the new employee acclimate to the culture, answers any questions and helps with any challenges, she said.
After that, the new employee meets with the mentor for an informal lunch.
“After experiencing the program, I think more companies should adopt it,” she said.
