One of the keys to integrate dashboard solutions for OpsMgr is to have dashboards route to the appropriate place when areas are clicked on. As an example, on a NOC dashboard view clicking on a Distributed Application would most likely default to opening it in the Health Explorer but a more useful view may actually be the Diagram View. One of the commonly asked questions is what URL do I need to access a specific view in the OpsMgr web console which was discussed in this article. How to change where the links go will depend based upon what dashboard technology you are using but two of the common ones where this would be relevant are Visio Integration and Savision Live Maps – both of which will be discussed in this blog entry.
Savision Live Maps
In the Live Maps authoring console when an object is linked Live Maps will either open the map which it is linked to or the Health Explorer for the object.
TIP: In the dashboard, you can right-click on an object and get the full set of options available for an entity as shown below: (Open, Alert View, Event View, Performance View, Diagram View, State View, Health Explorer). This is one major benefit to the Savision Live Maps solution as it natively integrates with these options.
To override the default behavior in a Live Map you can add a Hot Spot using the icon highlighted below and drag it on top of the object. In this case the Reporting object.
The dashboard appears the same, and right-clicking will still provide the ability to open different OpsMgr views, but now a double-click on the Reporting icon opens the URL specified in the Hot Spot.
In Visio Integration to change the default URL behavior, right-click the icon, and Edit Hyperlinks. The default configuration is shown below with a Health Explorer Link, Diagram View (default) and Alert View. Each of these different views provides access to a different URL. By adding your own URL and setting it to the default you can change what happens when the icon is clicked on.
State enabled icons (such as the Hydra Health Service shown below) can be double-clicked and the default URL will open as a result.
TIP: When browsing a Visio web diagram, pressing Ctrl and clicking on a shape will open the Shape Data pane and select the shape as shown below which shows links for both the Health Explorer and the Alert View URL’s. This will show you all the hyperlinks defined for the entity (shown above), and you can click each one.
Summary: By customizing what URL’s will launch where you a dashboard you can provide significantly more functionality to your dashboard solutions.
