Catapult Systems Goes Green through Server Consolidation
AUSTIN, Texas – July 22, 2008 – Catapult Systems, a leading Microsoft consulting firm and National Microsoft Systems Integrator (NSI), is doing its part to "go green" by consolidating 25 of its own servers into one. The result is double the computing capacity while saving energy, space and cost.
"The old servers were taller than their data center room when stacked," said Joe Stocker, IT Director. "Our new single server replaces all 25 old ones and is just 3.5 inches tall – the size of a pizza box. We estimate this saves us 165,475 kWh of energy per year, enough to power over a dozen homes, and reduces the number of parts required to maintain our servers by 64%."
The server consolidation began as an initiative to capitalize on the latest Microsoft virtualization products.
According to Catapult CEO Sam Goodner, "Initially, we wanted to demonstrate how effective server virtualization could be for our clients by doing it ourselves; but then the project turned into something else entirely. It didn’t take us long to realize just how much money, space, and energy we would be saving, and how much more computing power we would gain."
Catapult Systems also ensured the existing 25 servers did not end up in landfills by donating them to American Youthworks, a local non-profit dedicated to help at-risk youth through education, employment, training, and counseling.
