Austin’s “Fit” Meet Austin’s “Art-Minded” in the Arts Run 2006

AUSTIN, Texas, August 10, 2006 - The State and Paramount Theatres present the first ever Arts Run, September 9, 2006. The Arts Run, a benefit for the State and Paramount Theatres, consists of two races, a 5K Run/Walk and a Kids Fun Run. Runners, walkers, sponsors and volunteers are encouraged to run or walk dressed as their favorite stage or film star and prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. In addition, the fastest chip times will also be rewarded. All monies raised September 9th will go directly to the nonprofit State and Paramount Theatres.

This unique fundraising could not have come at a better time. A portion of the State Theatre’s 2006-2007 season has been cancelled, due to a decision following a final assessment of the June 13, 2006 flood, determining the damages too extensive to properly host patrons and support the rest of the season.

“While the decision to temporarily close the State Theatre for the next several months was a difficult one, we believe taking some time to consider all our options at this stage will ultimately ensure the future success of the program,” said Ken Stein, executive director of the State and Paramount Theatres. The theatres will focus on a strategic plan to renovate and revitalize the State Theatre to better serve Austin’s community.   In the meantime, the community is urged to continue its support for Austin’s beloved theatres by participating in the upcoming Arts Run 2006.

“We’re excited to play a role in the Arts Run,” said Sam Goodner, chief executive officer of Catapult Systems. “It embodies what is great about Austin and why our employees love living here: an athletic spirit, an appreciation for the arts and a desire to play a positive role in the community. We hope to be part of the continuing tradition for many years to come.”

In addition to Catapult Systems, Inc., RunTex, Raceworks and Gold’s Gym are also sponsoring the event and assisting with promotions. “We love to combine fitness and philanthropy,” said Paul Carrozza of RunTex. “Austin is a very active community that cares and shows it every weekend. Austin is the Hollywood of Texas… What an exciting place to live.”

All registered participants will receive an Arts Run t-shirt and have the opportunity to win door prizes the day of the race. This event is an easy and inexpensive way for the younger generations to get involved and support the theatres and have a great time doing it. “Theatres as old as ours must always find new and fresh ways to get the community involved, especially in a city as fit and art-minded as Austin,” expressed Maica Jordan, Development Director for the State and Paramount Theatres. People can visit www.austintheatre.org to register for the event.
